Wildlife & Nature
Yachats State Recreation Area — in the heart of Yachats village — provides easy access to one of the most dynamic rocky coastlines in Oregon. The site’s 801 Trail follows the basalt shoreline past blowholes, surge channels, and tide pools. During high tides and storms, the ocean forces water through cracks in the basalt, creating spectacular spouting effects. The rocky coast supports a vertical zonation of marine life — from splash-zone lichens and barnacles at the top, through mussel beds, to sea urchin-dominated communities below. Each zone represents different tolerances to air exposure, wave force, and predation. Wandering tattlers and black turnstones forage on the rocks during migration. Harbor seals watch from offshore. The area is an important monitoring site for marine biodiversity.

Cape Perpetua — adjacent — is the highest accessible point on the Oregon coast (803 feet). Thor’s Well and Spouting Horn create dramatic ocean effects. Carl G. Washburne Memorial State Park has the Hobbit Trail and Roosevelt elk viewing. Amanda’s Trail commemorates the forced march of Alsea people. Drift Inn in Yachats offers live music and local flavor. Oregon Coast Trail passes through town. Yachats Brewing serves craft beer with ocean views.
