Wildlife & Nature
Beachside State Recreation Site offers direct access to the central Oregon coast\’s wide sandy beaches. The coastal ecosystem here transitions from marine to terrestrial — each zone supporting different communities. The intertidal zone reveals life at low tide — purple shore crabs, hermit crabs, and aggregating anemones. The beach supports razor clams — these fast-digging bivalves (they can burrow a foot per minute) are prized by recreational diggers during open seasons. Brown pelicans — once devastated by DDT — have made a dramatic recovery along the Oregon coast, flying in formation just above the waves. Marbled murrelets — seabirds that nest in old-growth forest up to 50 miles inland — fish the nearshore waters.
