About Bonavista

Bonavista State Park Golf Course in Oneida County provides public golf on a 9-hole course in the Mohawk Valley — the historic gateway between the Atlantic seaboard and the Great Lakes. The Mohawk Valley served as the route of the Erie Canal (1825), which transformed New York into America’s commercial capital by connecting the Hudson River to Lake Erie. The valley’s rolling terrain makes for scenic golf in central New York.

Insider Tips

Finger Lakes: Bonavista sits in the Finger Lakes region — 11 long, narrow lakes carved by glaciers. Pro tip: The Finger Lakes produce world-class Riesling — the cool climate and glacial soils rival Germany’s Rhine Valley. Gorges: “Ithaca is Gorges” — the region’s 150+ waterfalls and deep gorges make it one of the most scenic areas in the Northeast.

Best Time to Visit

Summer: Golf and lake recreation. Fall: Finger Lakes foliage and wine harvest. Spring: Gorge waterfalls at peak flow. Winter: Cross-country skiing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How were the Finger Lakes formed?

The 11 Finger Lakes were carved by glaciers during the last ice age — massive ice sheets deepened existing river valleys into long, narrow, deep lakes. Seneca Lake is 618 feet deep — never freezing completely. The glaciers left behind fertile soil and steep gorge walls with hundreds of waterfalls. The region’s microclimate (moderated by the deep lakes) allows wine production at a latitude that would otherwise be too cold.
