Devils Punch Bowl State Natural Area protects one of the Oregon Coast’s most dramatic geological features โ€” a massive, bowl-shaped rock formation created when the roof of two sea caves collapsed. At high tide, Pacific waves surge into the bowl, creating a churning, frothing cauldron of whitewater that sounds like thunder. At low tide, visitors can scramble down to the beach below and explore the caves and tide pools. The adjacent headland provides a spectacular viewpoint over the bowl and south along the coast to Otter Rock.

When should I visit?

Visit at high tide for the dramatic churning effect. Winter storms create the most powerful displays. At low tide, explore the tide pools on the beach below โ€” but watch for sneaker waves and never turn your back on the ocean.

About Devils Punch Bowl

Devils Punch Bowl State Natural Area features one of the Oregon coast’s most dramatic geological formations โ€” a massive, collapsed sea cave that creates a natural “punch bowl” where waves crash through tunnels in the rock and churn violently in the enclosed basin. At high tide during winter storms, the spectacle is truly thunderous. The formation was carved over thousands of years by the relentless Pacific surf.

Things to Do

Viewing the punch bowl from the rim is the main attraction โ€” the viewing area offers a direct look down into the churning cauldron. At low tide, you can descend to the beach level and explore the cave openings. The adjacent beach has excellent tide pools. Nearby Beverly Beach State Park offers camping and miles of sandy beach for walking.
