Wildlife & Nature
Fogarty Creek State Recreation Area features a sheltered beach where Fogarty Creek flows through a tree-covered canyon to the ocean — creating one of the most picturesque and wind-protected beaches on the central Oregon coast. The creek’s small estuary provides nursery habitat for juvenile fish. The surrounding Sitka spruce and shore pine forest shelters the beach from the relentless coastal winds. Tidepools along the rocky margins support diverse intertidal communities — aggregating anemones, hermit crabs, and purple shore crabs. Brown pelicans — recovered from DDT-era population crashes — patrol the surf in V-formation. Harlequin ducks bob in the turbulent nearshore surf. The sheltered character makes this beach especially popular for families with young children.
