🏝️ Three Islands Connected by Bridges on South Carolina’s Largest Lake — Dreher Island State Park on Lake Murray, Newberry County, South Carolina, 348 acres across three islands, 12 miles of shoreline, 97 campsites, lakeside villas, marina with wet slips, bass fishing tournament venue, boat ramps, nature trails, bald eagles, near Columbia SC — Newberry County, SC
Lake Murray is 50,000 acres of warm, blue South Carolina water — and Dreher Island sits in the middle of it on three islands connected by a causeway and two bridges. You drive across the bridges, and suddenly you’re surrounded by lake on all sides. Twelve miles of shoreline. Ninety-seven campsites. A marina. And some of the best bass fishing in the Southeast.
This is where national bass fishing tournaments come to compete — the park has dedicated tournament shelters with Wi-Fi and catch-and-release tanks. But you don’t need to be a tournament angler to appreciate Lake Murray. The water is warm from May through October, the sunsets turn the lake gold, and the camping puts you within steps of the shoreline.
What to Do
| Activity | Details |
|---|---|
| Fishing | Lake Murray is a premier bass lake — largemouth bass, striped bass (30+ lb striper are caught here), catfish, crappie, and bream. Fish from the shore, the pier, or a boat. The park hosts major national bass tournaments — if the pros fish here, the fishing is world-class |
| Camping | 97 paved campsites for RV and tent camping. Many with lake views. Full hookups available. Plus 5 fully furnished lakeside villas for those who prefer walls and air conditioning. Wake up, walk to the water. That simple |
| Boating | Three boat ramps for private vessels. Marina with wet slips (water and electric hookups). Launch a boat and explore 50,000 acres of lake — coves, islands, and 520 miles of shoreline to discover |
| Swimming | Swim anywhere along the park’s shoreline — at your own risk. The water warms to 80°F+ in summer. The lake bottom is sandy in places. Find your own cove and swim in water that’s been catching South Carolina sun all day |
| Nature Trails | Billy Dreher Nature Trail and Little Gap Trail wind through the islands — easy walking through hardwood forest with lake views. Bald eagles nest in the park — the park’s eagle population has been growing. Birdwatching is excellent year-round |
