Civil War History on the Ogeechee River

Fort McAllister State Park preserves the Confederacy’s best-preserved earthwork fortification. Located south of Savannah on the Great Ogeechee River, this historic site withstood seven naval bombardments before falling to General Sherman’s “March to the Sea” in 1864. Today, visitors can explore the cannons, bombproof barracks, and museum, all while enjoying modern camping and fishing in a stunning salt marsh setting.

History & Museum

The park is a living history lesson. The Civil War Museum houses artifacts, a diorama of the assault, and an informative film. Outside, you can walk the self-guided tour of the earthworks.

Savage Island Camping

The campground is uniquely situated on Savage Island, accessible via a causeway through the salt marsh. It’s shaded by giant live oaks draped in Spanish moss.

  • RV/Tent Sites (67): Water/Electric, some full hookups. Spacious and shaded.
  • Cottages (7): raised on stilts, screened porches, fully equipped kitchens.
  • Backcountry Sites: 2 designated tent areas for a more primitive experience.

⚠️ Tide Awareness: The causeway to the campground can occasionally be affected by extreme high tides (“King Tides”). Check tide charts if arriving during full moon periods.

Fishing & Boating

The Ogeechee River offers excellent salt and brackish water fishing. A boat ramp and fishing pier provide access.
