Horseshoe Lake is a natural oxbow — a bend of the Mississippi that the river abandoned when it shifted course, which explains both the horseshoe shape and the astonishing shallowness: the lake averages just 3 feet deep. That makes it waterfowl-and-flatboat country, not speedboat country. Two public ramps serve the roughly 1,000 acres of open water and moist-soil units, all watercraft are held to a 50-horsepower limit, and boat fishing pauses during waterfowl season, when hunting runs from the lake’s public blinds (allocated on a three-year cycle). Anglers work channel catfish, bass, crappie and bluegill; an accessible fishing pier sits about 150 feet from the boat-dock parking lot.
The deeper story here is human: people have used this lake since about 8000 BC, and when Cahokia — the great mound city a few miles south — held 30,000 to 40,000 people, this lake fed them. Visitor Tips
Entry is free, as at all Illinois state parks. But know before you go: the campground, its access road and the hiking trail are closed until May 2027 for a causeway installation project — as of August 2026, per the IDNR park page. When it reopens, the 26-site tent-and-trailer campground runs May 1 through September 30 with pit toilets, water hydrants and a dump station, no hookups, and a 7-day limit — and it takes no reservations; sites are first come, first served (only group camping books through ExploreMoreIL).

Horseshoe Lake State Park — 2,960 acres near Granite City — sits in the floodplain of the Mississippi River across from St. Louis. The 2,400-acre oxbow lake — formed when a meander of the Mississippi was cut off from the main channel — is one of the most important waterfowl wintering areas in Illinois. Canada geese concentrate here by the tens of thousands during winter migration — Horseshoe Lake was the first in the nation to be managed specifically for goose hunting. The lake’s bald cypress trees — growing at the extreme northern edge of their range — create a southern swamp atmosphere unusual for the St. Louis metro area. Great blue herons, green herons, and black-crowned night herons fish the shallow waters. Bald eagles winter at the lake.
