Jasper State Recreation Site (also known as Jasper State Park) is a state recreation site on the southern Oregon coast near Gold Beach, Curry County, Oregon, managed by Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. The site features a protected beach cove popular for agate hunting and beachcombing along the rocky shoreline, tide pools teeming with sea stars, anemones, mussels, and hermit crabs accessible at low tide, dramatic sea stack rock formations rising from the surf offshore, hiking along rugged coastal bluffs with panoramic Pacific Ocean views, whale watching opportunities during the gray whale migration (December–January southbound, March–June northbound), a picnic area with sheltered tables above the beach out of the coastal wind, access to the Oregon Coast Trail for extended coastal hiking, and a quintessential southern Oregon Coast experience with fewer crowds than the popular northern beaches.
The southern Oregon coast is the least-visited stretch of Oregon’s famously scenic coastline — wilder, more rugged, and more remote than the popular northern beaches around Cannon Beach and Lincoln City. Jasper Beach captures this raw, uncrowded coastal beauty perfectly.
The agate hunting draws dedicated rockhounds — jasper, agate, and other semi-precious stones wash up on the beach after winter storms, creating a free treasure hunt that’s especially productive in late fall and early spring.

Wildlife & Nature
Jasper State Park provides access to the Middle Fork Willamette River — one of the major tributaries of Oregon’s most important river system. The Willamette Valley — Oregon’s agricultural heartland — was the destination for most Oregon Trail emigrants and remains the state’s most populated region. The river supports wild runs of spring Chinook salmon — the most prized Pacific salmon for their rich, high-fat flesh. Western pond turtles — Oregon’s only native freshwater turtle — bask on logs in quiet backwater areas. These turtles face threats from habitat loss and invasive red-eared sliders (released pets). The riparian forest supports breeding populations of western wood-pewees, warbling vireos, and lazuli buntings.
