Spencer Spit State Park — 138 acres on the east coast of Lopez Island in the San Juan Islands — features a dramatic sand spit extending 0.5 miles into Lopez Sound, nearly connecting to Frost Island. The spit — formed by longshore drift — creates a protected lagoon. Crabbing from the spit is excellent. Bald eagles perch in the madrone and Douglas fir trees. Harbor seals rest on the spit tip. The park’s 37 campsites include beachfront and forest settings. Great blue herons fish the lagoon shallows.
