Previously known as Arrowhead State Park, the Arrowhead Area at Lake Eufaula State Park is one of Oklahoma State Park System’s most popular public recreational spaces.

Tucked away in northern Pittsburg County, the 2,200-acre state park is located on the stunning peninsula of Eufaula Lake.

It’s a popular day trip and camping spot for visitors from all over the USA. Not least for those who enjoy water based recreational activities on one of the southwest’s largest man-made lakes.

It’s also highly regarded as as a spot for getting at one with nature. Arguably housing some of the most picturesque scenery in the whole of Oklahoma.

Location

Arrowhead State Park is situated about 18 miles north of the town of McAlester, which you can reach via U.S. Highway 69.

It is an easy park to get to from most of Oklahoma’s major cities.

From the state capital, Oklahoma City, as well as Norman, it will take you about two hours to drive west, while Tulsa and Broken Arrow involves a 90 minute drive south.

Rather uniquely, Arrowhead also has an airstrip onsite, for those who would like to fly into the park.

Activities

For the visitor, the park offers a wide range of outdoor recreational pursuits, many of which are centered around the largest man-made lake in Oklahoma.

There are also plenty of opportunities for fishing, hiking and a very good golf course to enjoy too. While other activities like volleyball, wildlife watching and biking will keep you plenty entertained.

Hiking At The Arrowhead Area at Lake Eufaula State Park

If you are in to hiking, the park offers two main trails – the Outlaw Nature Trail and the Arrowhead Hiking Trail.

The Outlaw Nature Trail runs through a very scenic hilly landscape for about three-quarters of a mile. While the Arrowhead Hiking Trail is a three mile trail that is recommended only for seasoned hikers.

On both trails, visitors should get the opportunity to spot a wide range of flora and fauna, including many species of flowers and the likes of deer, rabbits and wild turkeys.

Recreational Water Activities at The Arrowhead Area at Lake Eufaula State Park

The beautiful Lake Eufaula offers plenty of opportunities for water based recreational activities.

This includes the likes of canoeing, kayaking, SUP, row boating, water skiing, jet skiing and wake boarding.

There is also a lovely swimming beach which is a great spot to sunbathe in the summer months as well as a marina – where you can hire out some of this equipment.

Fishing At The Arrowhead Area at Lake Eufaula State Park

As Arrowhead State Park is located on the peninsula of Lake Eufaula, fishing is a very popular activity.

The likes of crappie, catfish, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, stripers, sandbass and Kentucky bass, are in available abundance, and attract anglers from around the country for regular tournaments.

Those wanting to access the lake by boat can do so at the Area 51 Marina. You will also find fuel, tackle, boat slips and bait there. As well as an enclosed dock which is set aside for year round fishing and a fully equipped ship shore.

The park’s restaurant and bar is also located here and offers a lounge and outdoor sitting area.

Golf at The Arrowhead Area at Lake Eufaula State Park

One of the main features of the park is the spectacular Arrowhead Golf Course.

A full-service, 18 hole, par 72 course, it features Bermuda fairways and tees, as well as sleek greens of bent grass. It also has strategically placed sand bunkers and a small selection of water hazards, while two of the holes also provide fantastic views of the lake.

Supporting the golf course is a putting green, driving range and mini golf. There is also a pro shop, and cart rentals too.

The course is open from 7 am to 7 pm every day of the year except Christmas Day. You can book a tee time online through their website.

Pets At The Arrowhead Area at Lake Eufaula State Park

Arrowhead State Park is a pet-friendly park.

That said, there may be some restrictions for your dog. So it is worth checking with the park ranger once you arrive, as to what specific areas may be off limits to your four legged friend.

Camping and Amenities at The Arrowhead Area at Lake Eufaula State Park

For those looking for overnight accommodation, there are four main camping areas. These include Turkey Flats, Echo Ridge (which is close to the marina), Lakeview Circle (adjacent to the lake), and Hitching Post (an equestrian site).

All up, Arrowhead State Park offers 91 tent campsites and 91 RV sites. Of these RV sites, 20 offer full hookups, and most of the others offer either 30 or 50 aAmp electricity.

The park also has an equestrian camp that offers water, electricity and hitching posts, as well as a group camp that can sleep up to 144 people in its bunkhouses and also features a kitchen.

All of these sites can be reserved online.

In addition to its overnight accommodation options, the park also features several comfort stations with restrooms and hot showers, as well as a dump station onsite. There is also a playground for children to enjoy, as well as a number of pavilions with grills that are great spots for a picnic.

The ADA compliant campground also runs a gift shop which sells a nice range of souvenirs and basic grocery items. While there is also a restaurant on site too.
