Activities
With over 19,000 surface acres of lake and a whopping 225 miles of shoreline, the park is a haven for those who love the water. In addition, there are several trails to explore, as well an 18-hole golf course and plenty of scenic spots for picnics. Here is what to expect at the park.
Boating at Sequoyah State Park
If you love having fun on the water then you will love the recreational opportunities on offer at Fort Gibson Lake. It is a lovely place to enjoy kayaking, SUP, canoeing and other boating activities. There are even lighted boat ramps, and a full-service marina where you can rent out boats and other watercraft. As well as fill up your fuel, and buy supplies for bait and tackle.
Swimming at Sequoyah State Park
Swimming at the lake takes place at its lovely swimming beach. It is not lifeguarded, so you will need to exercise caution while there. If you prefer, another place to cool off during the summer months, is at the zero-entry swimming pool, or the children’s splash pad. Both of which are situated in the courtyard of the lodge.
Fishing at Sequoyah State Park
Beautiful Fort Gibson Lake is a terrific spot for fishing. There are plenty of places around the shoreline, including on the bluffs, pea gravel and grassy banks, where you can cast a line. If you have a valid Oklahoma state fishing license you will be able to catch plenty of spotted and white bass, largemouth and smallmouth bass and catfish too.
Hiking at Sequoyah State Park
As there is an excellent system of trails you can explore, hiking is a very popular activity at the park. For those who want to get out and about, the Fossil Trail, which is situated at the southern end of the park , takes you for half a mile along the shoreline and past the lodge. You may come across some fossils on this trail, hence the name. Running for 1.25-miles, the Eagles Roost Nature Trail is another fabulous trek. It covers the park’s northwestern section down by Paradise Cove, and is an especially good area for spotting eagles and other bird and wildlife.
Horseback Riding at Sequoyah State Park
For those who love horses, the park offers the Sequoyah Riding Stables. A fantastic 300-acre park that lies within the bigger state park. Here you can rent a horse and partake in a guided trail. You can even check out the Cowboy Camp that is situated at the stables, or take a hayride with your family.
Golfing at Sequoyah State Park
Want to enjoy a relaxing game of golf at the park? Then you will love the 18-hole par 70 course that resides in the park. Boasting terrific lake views, the course comprises stunning sand bunkers, and immaculate Bermuda grass greens. There is also a pro shop onsite where you can hire out clubs and carts, as well as purchase drinks and snacks. You can even arrange golf lessons too, or buy something from its gift shop. If you are open to trying a different style of golf, you can also have a go at the 18-hole disc golf course which runs alongside the main course. It’s a lot of fun!
Three Forks Nature Center at Sequoyah State Park
The park is home to a wide range of flora and fauna. Much of which you can learn about at the Three Forks Nature Center. Providing a fun experience for the whole family, you will get to discover more about animals like beavers, turtles and snakes that call the park home. The center also presents a number of programs specifically designed for children, as well as beautiful, guided nature hikes.
Pets at Sequoyah State Park
Pets are allowed in certain sections of the park and some of the accommodation. They are not allowed in the lodge, and other restrictions may also apply. So it is worthwhile contacting the main park office for further clarification.
Camping at Sequoyah State Park
For those wanting overnight accommodation the park offers plenty of RV and tent camping options. Tent camping sites are available at the Chocataw, Paradise Cove and The Creek campgrounds. While several RV camping sites, which include full hook-ups for 30-amp to 50-amp electricity, water and sewage are available at the Seminole campgrounds. There are also RV sites available at the Choctaw Campground that come with electric and water service only. All sites must be reserved online. As well as these RV and tent sites, the Lodge at Sequoyah State Park just happens to be Oklahoma’s biggest selection of state park lodges. Offering up 104 rooms and 45 cottages for guests to stay at. You will also find a group camp too that can sleep up to 98 people in 10 A-frame cabins, and also has a fully equipped kitchen.
Amenities at Sequoyah State Park
To support the campsites there are a good range of amenities at the park. This includes tennis and basketball courts, as well as a playground for kids to enjoy. There is also a recreation room, horseshoe pits, picnic pavilions, and three automated kiosks where you can source firewood that is locally harvested. At the lodge there are meeting rooms for conferences and group functions. You will also be able to get decent WI-FI as well.
