Charles Mears State Park
Overview: One of the Original 13 in Charming Pentwater
Tiny, perfectly positioned, and deeply loved, Charles Mears State Park packs an outsized punch into its compact 50 acres at the edge of the village of Pentwater in Oceana County. Established in 1920 as one of the original 13 Michigan state parks—on land donated by Carrie Mears, daughter of lumber baron Charles Mears—the park delivers what many visitors consider the essential Michigan beach vacation: a wide, sandy Lake Michigan beach, a 175-site modern campground just steps from the water, sunset views that have been drawing families back for generations, and one of the most charming small resort villages on the Michigan coast directly adjacent.
What Mears State Park lacks in acreage it compensates for with location and character. The park sits at the north side of the channel connecting Lake Michigan to Pentwater Lake, giving visitors access to both the open lake surf and the calmer, warmer inland lake. The Pentwater North Pierhead Light marks the channel entrance, and visitors regularly walk the pier for fishing, photography, and sunset watching.
The Beach
Mears’ Lake Michigan beach is the park’s primary attraction—a generous sweep of sugar sand facing due west into the afternoon sun. The beach is wide, well-maintained, and produces the Lake Michigan sunset spectacle that has become synonymous with the Michigan west coast experience: vivid oranges, pinks, and purples reflecting off the lake surface as the sun drops below the horizon.
- Dog Beach: A designated dog-friendly beach section at the south end near the pier allows four-legged visitors to enjoy the lake—a relatively rare amenity in the state park system
- Swimming: Gradual entry with typical Lake Michigan conditions—cold early in summer, warming to comfortable temperatures by late July
Old Baldy
An interpretive trail leads to “Old Baldy”—a sand dune within the park that provides elevated views of Lake Michigan, the beach, and the surrounding landscape. The trail ranges from a quarter-mile to one mile depending on the route, offering a quick but rewarding contrast to the flat beach experience.
175-Site Campground
The modern campground is located just steps from the beach—one of the closest campground-to-beach distances in the Michigan system. Sites offer electrical hookups and modern facilities in a setting that prioritizes beach convenience above all else. Reserve early for summer weekends; the combination of proximity to the beach and the charm of Pentwater village makes these among the most sought-after campsites on the Michigan coast.
Pentwater Village
Pentwater is one of the most appealing small resort villages on Lake Michigan’s eastern shore—a walkable downtown of galleries, restaurants, ice cream shops, and independent boutiques that has maintained its small-town character while providing the amenities that make a beach vacation comfortable. The village’s Pentwater Lake waterfront offers additional recreation, including kayak and boat rentals, fishing charters, and a public beach.
Silver Lake Sand Dunes
The Silver Lake Sand Dunes—one of the few places in the country where off-road vehicles are legally permitted to drive on open sand dunes—are located approximately 15–20 minutes south of Mears State Park, providing an easy day trip for visitors seeking a more adventurous dune experience.
