Wildlife & Nature
Carl G. Washburne Memorial State Park bridges the gap between coastal beach and old-growth Sitka spruce forest — the short Hobbit Trail winds through a tunnel of vegetation to an isolated beach. The park’s forest supports one of the highest densities of Roosevelt elk on the Oregon coast — herds of 30+ animals are frequently seen in the meadows along Highway 101. These elk — the largest subspecies in North America — were named for Theodore Roosevelt who established the Olympic Elk Reserve (now Olympic National Park) to protect them. Northern spotted owls inhabit the old-growth canopy. Marbled murrelets — endangered seabirds that nest high in old-growth trees up to 50 miles from the ocean — are present in the park’s ancient forest.

Heceta Head Lighthouse — arguably Oregon’s most beautiful lighthouse — is adjacent, with a Bed & Breakfast in the keeper’s quarters (reportedly one of the most haunted buildings in Oregon). Sea Lion Caves is next door. Cape Perpetua with Thor’s Well and Spouting Horn is minutes south. Darlingtonia State Natural Site protects carnivorous pitcher plants. Florence offers sand dune adventures and the charming Old Town waterfront. Yachats — one of the most welcoming small towns on the Oregon coast — offers excellent dining.
