🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆 Allagash Crown Jewel — Massive 5,583-acre wilderness lake in the heart of the Allagash Waterway — moose, eagles, loons

Eagle Lake is one of the crown jewels of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway — a massive 5,583-acre lake surrounded by unbroken boreal forest. The lake is a critical link in the 92-mile Allagash canoe route (designated a National Wild and Scenic River in 1970). Eagle Lake’s pristine waters support native brook trout and landlocked salmon, while the surrounding forest is prime moose habitat — paddlers regularly encounter moose swimming across the lake.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Allagash Wilderness Waterway?

The 92-mile Allagash is America’s first state-administered Wilderness Waterway and was designated a National Wild and Scenic River in 1970. The full canoe trip takes 7–10 days through some of the wildest country in the eastern US.

Do people speak French in Maine?

Yes — the St. John Valley in northern Aroostook County has a significant French-speaking Acadian population. These are descendants of French settlers expelled from Nova Scotia by the British in 1755 (the “Grand Dérangement” — the basis for Longfellow’s Evangeline). Many families still speak French at home. The Acadian Festival in Madawaska celebrates this heritage annually.

Aroostook wilderness: Eagle Lake sits in Aroostook County — Maine’s largest county (larger than Connecticut and Rhode Island combined). Pro tip: Aroostook is Maine’s potato country — “The County” produces 90% of Maine’s potato crop. Acadian heritage: Northern Maine has strong Acadian (French-Canadian) heritage — many residents speak French, and the culture is more Quebec than New England.

Best Time to Visit

Summer: Lake fishing and canoeing. Fall: Remote foliage — no crowds. Winter: Snowmobiling capital — 2,000+ miles of trails. Spring: Ice-out fishing.
