Felix Valle House State Historic Site in Ste. Genevieve preserves the 1818 Federal-style home of a prominent French-Creole merchant in America’s oldest settlement west of the Mississippi. Ste. Genevieve was founded by the French in the 1730s — decades before the Louisiana Purchase — and retains the largest collection of French colonial vertical-log (poteaux-en-terre) architecture in North America.

Genevieve’s walkable historic district includes the Bolduc House (finest French colonial structure in North America), the Centre for French Colonial Life, and several B&Bs in restored colonial buildings. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site candidate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is French colonial architecture?

French colonial buildings in Ste. Genevieve use vertical log construction (poteaux-en-terre or poteaux-sur-solle) — unlike the horizontal logs of Anglo-American cabins. Posts are set vertically into the ground or on a sill, with infill of stone and clay. Wide galleries (porches) surround the buildings. This French technique survives almost nowhere else in the US — making Ste. Genevieve architecturally unique.
