Frequently Asked Questions

What is French colonial architecture?

French colonial buildings in Ste. Genevieve use vertical log construction (poteaux-en-terre or poteaux-sur-solle) — unlike the horizontal logs of Anglo-American cabins. Posts are set vertically into the ground or on a sill, with infill of stone and clay. Wide galleries (porches) surround the buildings. This French technique survives almost nowhere else in the US — making Ste. Genevieve architecturally unique.
