Kishwaukee River State Fish and Wildlife Area protects riparian habitat along the Kishwaukee River โ a major tributary of the Rock River in DeKalb County. The Rock River valley was home to the Sauk and Meskwaki peoples until the Black Hawk War of 1832 โ the last major conflict between the US government and Native Americans east of the Mississippi. Chief Black Hawk’s resistance to forced removal from these fertile river valleys ended with his defeat and the opening of northern Illinois to settlement.
