Ludington State Park is one of Michigan’s most beloved outdoor destinations, occupying a stunning landscape where seven miles of Lake Michigan shoreline meet the 5,000-acre Hamlin Lake amid towering sand dunes, ancient forests, and pristine wetlands. With 21 miles of marked trails, 355 campsites, the historic Big Sable Point Lighthouse, and some of the most spectacular sunsets on the Great Lakes, Ludington consistently ranks among the top state parks in the United States. Whether you’re hiking through dune forests, climbing a 112-foot lighthouse tower, paddling a canoe through marshy backwaters, or simply watching the sun drop into Lake Michigan from a wide sandy beach, Ludington delivers an unforgettable Pure Michigan experience.

Big Sable Point Lighthouse

The Big Sable Point Lighthouse is Ludington’s crown jewel — a striking black-and-white striped tower built in 1867 that rises 112 feet above the Lake Michigan shoreline. Reaching the lighthouse requires a scenic 1.8-mile walk or bike ride along a sand-and-gravel path through the dunes, making the arrival all the more rewarding. Visitors can climb the tower for panoramic views of the endless lake horizon and forested dune landscape. The lighthouse grounds and gift shop are free to explore, while tower climbing costs $8 for adults / $5 for youth (17 and under). The lighthouse is typically open July through late October in 2025.

🚌 Bus Days: On select dates, bus service runs to the lighthouse for $6/adult and $4/youth, eliminating the 3.6-mile round-trip hike. Check the Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association for the schedule.
