Mianus River Park is a 391-acre nature reserve on the Greenwich–Stamford border. Two miles of the Mianus River flow through it, and the City of Stamford describes scenic forest, vernal pools, a wide variety of wildlife and miles of rolling trails for walking. Park only in the designated lots at the Stamford entrance (Merriebrook Lane) or the Greenwich entrance; there is no street parking at either. Mianus River Park protects one of the most ecologically significant river corridors in Fairfield County — where some of the nation’s wealthiest suburbs border wild gorge forest. The Mianus River Gorge Preserve (adjacent, managed by The Nature Conservancy) protects old-growth hemlock-hardwood forest — some trees 350+ years old. Together these properties create an unbroken forest corridor in one of America’s most densely developed regions. The gorge microclimate supports species unusual for Connecticut’s latitude — including walking fern and maidenhair spleenwort. The river supports brook trout despite surrounding development — testament to the effectiveness of forested buffers in maintaining water quality.
