Wildlife & Nature

Milo McIver State Park — 952 acres along the Clackamas River — is one of the premier outdoor recreation parks in the Portland metropolitan area. The park is home to one of the world’s largest disc golf courses — hosting the prestigious Beaver State Fling professional disc golf tournament. The Clackamas River supports one of the most important wild salmon runs in the lower Columbia Basin — spring Chinook, fall Chinook, coho, and winter steelhead. Pacific lamprey — ancient jawless fish unchanged for 450 million years — still migrate up the Clackamas. Bald eagles nest along the river corridor. Great blue herons maintain a rookery in the tall cottonwoods. The park’s equestrian trails attract riders, and the diverse forest supports nesting ospreys.

Nearby Attractions

Estacada — gateway to the Clackamas River recreation corridor — has a charming downtown. Bagby Hot Springs in the Mount Hood National Forest offers rustic natural soaking. Clackamas River Trail follows the river through scenic canyon terrain. Timothy Lake provides mountain lake camping beneath Mt. Hood. Promontory Park at North Fork Reservoir offers swimming and boat access. Eagle Fern Park (Clackamas County) provides forest hiking. Faraday Lake offers fishing and paddling.
