Jackson F. Kimball State Recreation Site sits at the headwaters of the Wood River — one of Oregon’s most remarkable spring-fed rivers. Crystal-clear springs emerge from volcanic rock, immediately forming a navigable river at a constant 42°F year-round. The Wood River supports one of the largest remaining populations of bull trout in the Klamath Basin — these native char require the coldest, cleanest water in Oregon and are listed as threatened under the ESA. The river’s consistency makes it a world-class fly fishing destination. Great blue herons and osprey fish the clear waters. Sandhill cranes — with their prehistoric bugling calls — nest in the surrounding marshes. The park sits at 4,282 feet elevation in the ponderosa pine forest zone.
