Location & Getting There
Jackson F. Kimball State Recreation Site sits at the headwaters of the Wood River in Oregon’s Klamath Basin. A clear spring bubbles from a rocky hillside, and the stream flows out of the pine forest into open meadow laced with quaking aspen. The park’s coordinates are 42.7364, -121.9771.
Camping
Camping here is seasonal and primitive: 10 first-come, first-served sites without water beside a spring-fed lagoon, plus 2 primitive horse campsites, also without water. A walking trail connects the campground to the spring, and you can reach the Wood River’s fishing water from the park by canoe.

Jackson F. Kimball State Recreation Site sits at the headwaters of the Wood River — one of Oregon’s most remarkable spring-fed rivers. Crystal-clear springs emerge from volcanic rock, immediately forming a navigable river at a constant 42°F year-round. The Wood River supports one of the largest remaining populations of bull trout in the Klamath Basin — these native char require the coldest, cleanest water in Oregon and are listed as threatened under the ESA. The river’s consistency makes it a world-class fly fishing destination. Great blue herons and osprey fish the clear waters. Sandhill cranes — with their prehistoric bugling calls — nest in the surrounding marshes. The park sits at 4,282 feet elevation in the ponderosa pine forest zone.

Crater Lake National Park — Oregon’s only national park — is 30 minutes west. Wood River Wetland provides exceptional birding and the headspring is one of Oregon’s largest natural springs.
