Wildlife & Nature
Dabney State Recreation Area along the Sandy River in the Columbia River Gorge provides accessible nature within 30 minutes of downtown Portland. The Sandy River — named by Lewis and Clark for its sandy bottom — supports wild runs of steelhead, Chinook salmon, and coho salmon. The Sandy River Delta (where the Sandy meets the Columbia) was restored by removing a dam in 2007 — one of Oregon’s most successful river restoration projects. The park’s riparian forest of bigleaf maple, red alder, and Douglas fir supports nesting bald eagles and osprey. American dippers bob on rocks in the river’s rapids. Great blue herons maintain a rookery in the tall cottonwoods. The river provides one of the closest wild swimming experiences to Portland.

Historic Columbia River Highway begins nearby — America’s first planned scenic highway. Multnomah Falls (620 feet) is 20 minutes east. Crown Point Vista House offers panoramic gorge views. Oxbow Regional Park provides old-growth forest and river access. Mount Hood — Oregon’s highest peak (11,249 feet) — dominates the skyline. Troutdale — the “Gateway to the Gorge” — has the McMenamins Edgefield (a former poor farm transformed into a hotel, brewery, and entertainment complex). Lewis and Clark State Recreation Site offers Sandy River access.
