Minam State Recreation Area sits at the confluence of the Minam and Wallowa Rivers in the rugged canyon country of Northeast Oregon โ the gateway to the Eagle Cap Wilderness, the largest wilderness area in Oregon at 350,000 acres. The park provides camping and river access for fishing (steelhead, chinook salmon, rainbow trout) in some of Oregon’s cleanest, most pristine river water. The surrounding Wallowa Mountains โ Oregon’s “Little Switzerland” โ rise to nearly 10,000 feet with alpine lakes, granite peaks, and glacier-carved valleys.

Why is this called Little Switzerland?
The Wallowa Mountains feature dramatic alpine scenery โ granite peaks approaching 10,000 ft, glacial lakes, U-shaped valleys, and alpine meadows โ reminiscent of the Swiss Alps. The Eagle Cap Wilderness contains over 50 alpine lakes.
About Minam
Minam State Recreation Area sits at the confluence of the Minam and Wallowa Rivers in the remote northeastern corner of Oregon. The Minam River is one of the last truly wild rivers in Oregon โ designated a Wild and Scenic River with no roads along its entire length. This is the gateway to the Eagle Cap Wilderness.
Things to Do
Rafting and kayaking the Minam River (Class II-III rapids), fishing for wild steelhead and chinook salmon, and camping in the riverside campground. The area is a launching point for backpacking trips into the 360,000-acre Eagle Cap Wilderness.
