Wildlife & Nature
Emigrant Springs State Heritage Area preserves the campsite where Oregon Trail emigrants rested after the grueling ascent of the Blue Mountains — one of the most difficult sections of the 2,000-mile trail. The park’s old-growth ponderosa pine and grand fir forest includes specimens that were already large trees when the first wagons rolled through in the 1840s. At 3,943 feet elevation in the Blue Mountains, the park supports Rocky Mountain elk, mule deer, and wild turkeys. Great gray owls — the tallest owl species in North America (up to 33 inches) — inhabit the surrounding forest. Their facial disk focuses sound so precisely that they can locate prey under 18 inches of snow. Pileated woodpeckers drum on the old-growth snags.
