Things to Do
W. G. Jones is a 1,722-acre working urban forest surrounded by Conroe and The Woodlands, with nearly 17 miles of trails and pathways for hiking, biking and horseback riding and a designated horse-trailer area (riders register online). The forest is home to a population of the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. The Sweetleaf Nature and Fitness Trail, two small lakes with limited fishing and picnicking, a geocaching series and an orienteering course round out the visit. Best Time to Visit
The forest is open year-round during daylight hours only. Maps and restrooms are available at the Conroe District Office on F.M. 1488 on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and group educational tours can be booked by appointment (as of October 2026).
