Activities
Bring your tent, RV or stay in one of the cabins inside Wind Creek State Park. This is a horse friendly park too with a separate equestrian camping area and trails that are open to horseback riders. Interested in archery? There’s a target range available. Like to play mini golf? There’s an 18-hole putt putt golf course as well. And if you’re looking for the real thing – Lakewinds Golf Course, one of Alabama’s finest golf courses, is only 5 miles away in Alexander City. Swimming at Wind Creek State Park
Lake Martin’s clean, clear water is a pleasure to swim in and there is a small beach area available inside of the park near the North and South picnic areas. Many brave visitors enjoy the thrill of jumping off of the 60 foot cliff at Chimney Rock and into the lake below. If you’re interested in climbing up high but don’t care to jump then climb to the top of the silo near the lake’s edge. This grain silo was built in 1915 and has a viewing platform on top for extensive views of the lake and the park.
Boating at Wind Creek State Park
Bring your own boat or rent one inside of the park. The Marina has flat bottom boats, pontoons and motorized boats available for rent. And Creem at the Creek offers rentals of kayaks, canoes and paddle boards. Plus there’s a convenient boat launch nearby and boat slip rentals at the Marina.
Fishing at Wind Creek State Park
The 210 foot pier, open 24 hours a day, means plenty of opportunity for fishing at Wind Creek State Park. Popular catches include crappie, bluegill and striped bass. Fishing licenses, bait and supplies are available at the Marina.
Trails at Wind Creek State Park
Explore the some 30 miles of trails inside of Wind Creek State Park by foot, bicycle or horse (all trails are horse friendly). Here are a few of the trails inside the park:
- Alabama Reunion Trail – A moderate to difficult 3.8 mile forest loop.
- Campfire Trail – A moderate 1.8 miles trail that is steep in places and winds through forest, rock outcroppings, streams and wildflowers.
- Wind Creek Orange + Blue Trail Loop – An easy trail to walk, hike, bike or ride but is 9.4 miles long if you do the entire loop.
- Wind Creek Yellow Loop – An easy 2.1 mile trail that may be steep for some in certain spots.
- Jeff Reed Horse Trail – Combines the orange and blue trails for a 20 mile ride through the forest past ferns, wildflowers, streams and views of the lake.
Get a view from above on one of the walkways and ziplines offered by Screaming Eagle Adventures. They offer canopy tours, 11 zip lines and 6 sky walkways in the trees (20-70 feet in the air!). Wildlife at Wind Creek State Park
The park is a stop along Alabama’s Piedmont Plateau Birding Trail. You’ll glimpse many birds during your stay at Wind Creek State Park including many varieties of waterfowl, songbird and raptor. Other wildlife you’re sure to spot are white tailed deer, squirrels, opossum, foxes, groundhogs, snakes, turtles and possibly an alligator. The main part of the old silo houses a Nature Center with information about the many species of wildlife in the park and in Alabama.
Camping at Wind Creek State Park
The large campground has 586 sites spread throughout the park and many with water views. Water and electric hookups are available at each site and many also have sewer connections. There is a separate equestrian camping area as well and it has 20 sites with electric and water hookups. Cozy camping cabins are also available and have beds, a private bathroom and a small kitchen. But keep in mind – you will need to bring your own linens, towels, cookware and utensils. There are bathhouses conveniently located throughout the park; and there are laundry facilities and a country store near the Marina. The Creem at the Creek sells sandwiches, pizza and ice cream and is open seasonally.
Pets at Wind Creek State Park
Pets must be leashed and are only allowed in designated areas. Some of the camping cabins are pet friendly, inquire when making reservations. Be sure to have current vaccine documents for your pet and they must be wearing tags.
