Beach Activities in State Parks
America’s state parks protect some of the country’s most stunning beaches — from the Atlantic coast dunes to Great Lakes shorelines and Pacific tide pools. State park beaches often have fewer crowds and lower fees than popular public beaches.

Types of State Park Beaches

Ocean Beaches — Found along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. Some have lifeguards seasonally.
Lake Beaches — Freshwater swimming at inland parks. Popular in the Midwest and Northeast.
River Beaches — Sandy banks along rivers. Great for wading and tubing.
Reservoir Beaches — Man-made lakes with designated swimming areas.

Know Before You Go

Lifeguards — Many state park beaches are unguarded. Swim at your own risk. Check park information for seasonal lifeguard schedules.
Fees — Most charge a vehicle entrance fee ($5–$15) rather than a separate beach fee.
Parking fills early — Summer weekends at popular beach parks can fill by mid-morning. Arrive before 10 AM.
Beach wheelchairs — An increasing number of parks offer free beach wheelchair loans for mobility-impaired visitors.
