Whether you’re planning a weekend escape or a week-long road trip, these sample itineraries will help you make the most of your state park adventures.

The Perfect Weekend (2 Days)

Day 1: Arrive Friday evening, set up camp, and enjoy a campfire dinner. Take a short sunset trail walk. Day 2: Morning hike on the park’s signature trail, afternoon swimming or fishing, and pack up by early evening. This is the ideal format for your first state park camping trip.

The Extended Weekend (3 Days)

Add a rest day in the middle for kayaking, wildlife watching, or exploring a nearby town. Three days gives you time to hike multiple trails without feeling rushed. Include at least one waterfall hike if your park offers one.

The Road Trip (5-7 Days)

String together 3-4 state parks in the same region. Drive no more than 3 hours between parks to keep the trip relaxing. Alternate between developed campgrounds and rustic sites for variety. Popular road trip routes include the Blue Ridge Parkway (Virginia/North Carolina), the Pacific Coast Highway (California/Oregon), and the Great Lakes Circle Tour.
