Wildlife & Nature
Tillamook State Forest — 360,000 acres — rose from the ashes of the devastating Tillamook Burns, a series of catastrophic wildfires (1933, 1939, 1945, 1951) that destroyed 355,000 acres of old-growth forest. The reforestation effort — the largest in US history — planted 72 million seedlings by hand between 1949 and 1973. The “Tillamook Burn to Tillamook Forest” story is one of Oregon’s greatest conservation achievements. Today the forest supports thriving wildlife populations — Roosevelt elk herds, black bears, mountain lions, and bobcats. Northern spotted owls are returning as the replanted forest matures. Salmon are recovering in the Wilson, Trask, and Tillamook Rivers. The forest provides 1,000+ miles of recreation trails for hiking, mountain biking, and OHV use.
