Echo Lake State Park (Cathedral Ledge)

🏆 New Hampshire’s Cathedral Ledge — World-Class Rock Climbing, Mountain Lake Swimming & White Mountain Views — Updated for 2026 with climbing access, swim beach info, auto road status, parking reservations

The granite wall rises 700 feet straight up from the forest floor, its sheer face ribboned with crack systems and dotted with climbers inching upward like determined ants on a monument. Below, a mountain lake sparkles in a bowl of forest — cold, clean, perfect for a post-climb plunge. And beyond it all, the White Mountains roll toward the horizon in waves of green and granite. This is Echo Lake State Park, a compact gem in North Conway, New Hampshire, where the iconic Cathedral Ledge draws rock climbers from around the world and a peaceful lake beneath offers everyone else one of the finest swimming spots in the mountains.

Located in the heart of the Mount Washington Valley, Echo Lake State Park combines a 15.7-acre mountain lake with sandy beach and swim area, the towering granite cliffs of Cathedral Ledge and White Horse Ledge, hiking trails, and an auto road to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in New England. It’s small — but what it lacks in acreage, it makes up for in concentrated mountain grandeur.

🏔️ Where Granite Meets Green

A 700-foot wall of granite rising from a crystal mountain lake, surrounded by the peaks and forests of the White Mountains — Echo Lake State Park is New Hampshire’s geological exclamation point. Climb it if you dare. Drive to the top if you’re wise. Swim in the lake below it if you’re warm. But don’t miss it. Especially in October, when the entire Saco River Valley ignites in color and Cathedral Ledge stands above it all like a granite throne overlooking New England’s most spectacular show.
