Michigan’s Premier Sand Dune Park on Lake Michigan’s Shores

P.J. Hoffmaster State Park is one of Michigan’s most beloved destinations — a stunning combination of three miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, towering sand dunes, and 10 miles of forested trails, all just minutes from Muskegon. The park is home to the Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center, which reopened in February 2026 after renovations, and offers a 297-site modern campground within walking distance of the beach. From climbing the iconic Dune Climb Stairway to watching Lake Michigan sunsets from the observation deck, Hoffmaster captures everything that makes the Michigan coast magical.

Sand Dunes and Beach

Hoffmaster’s sand dunes are among the finest on Lake Michigan’s eastern shore. The centerpiece is the Dune Climb Stairway — approximately 220 steps leading to an observation deck with panoramic views of the dunes, Lake Michigan, and the surrounding forest canopy. The park’s sandy beach is ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and beachcombing.

Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center

The Gillette Visitor Center tells the story of Michigan’s unique coastal dune ecosystem through interactive exhibits. After a renovation period, it reopened on February 14, 2026, with refreshed displays and educational programming.
