Darien Lakes State Park

1,845 Acres of Wooded Hills, Swimming & Western New York Camping

Darien Lakes State Park sprawls across nearly 2,000 acres of hilly woodlands and scenic ravines in Genesee County, offering one of western New York’s finest outdoor recreation destinations. With a sandy swimming beach, nearly nine miles of hiking trails, and over 150 campsites, it’s an ideal base camp for exploring the Finger Lakes region — and it conveniently neighbors the thrills of Six Flags Darien Lake theme park.

The park’s rolling terrain was shaped by glacial activity, creating a landscape of wooded drumlins, deep ravines with babbling streams, and the peaceful 12-acre Harlow Lake at its center. It’s a four-season destination offering something different with every visit.

Swimming & Lake Activities

The sandy beach on Harlow Lake is the park’s summer centerpiece. A designated guarded swimming area is open from Memorial Day through early September when lifeguards are on duty. The lake’s gradual depth and sandy bottom make it family-friendly. Fishing is also popular on Harlow Lake — cast for bass, panfish, and bullhead from the shore or a small boat.

Camping

With 155+ campsites, Darien Lakes is one of the region’s premier camping destinations.

  • Electric Sites (142 sites): Well-spaced sites in wooded loops with 20/30-amp electric hookups, picnic tables, fire rings, and grills. Perfect for tent campers and RVers alike.
  • Primitive Sites (13 sites): No-hookup tent sites for those seeking a quieter, more rustic experience.
  • Comfort Stations: Heated restrooms with coin-operated showers are located throughout the camping areas.

Reservations are available up to nine months in advance through ReserveAmerica. The campground is especially popular with families combining a state park stay with visits to Six Flags next door.

Hiking Trails

Darien Lakes offers nearly 9 miles of well-maintained trails winding through hilly woodlands, deep ravines, and along cascading streams. The park’s section of the Conservation Trail connects to the larger Finger Lakes Trail system, linking this park to a 580-mile network of trails spanning western and central New York.

  • Ravine Trails: Follow stream-carved gorges through lush forest, crossing wooden bridges and passing small waterfalls after rain.
  • Drumlin Loops: Moderate elevation changes through wooded glacial hills with good wildlife viewing — watch for white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and red-tailed hawks.
  • Harlow Lake Trail: An easy circumnavigation of the swimming lake, popular with families and birders.

More Activities

  • Mountain Biking: Multi-use trails welcome off-road cyclists
  • Disc Golf: An 18-hole course winds through the wooded terrain
  • Horseback Riding: Equestrian trails are available for riders with their own horses
  • Winter Sports: Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling on groomed trails
  • Six Flags Darien Lake: The massive theme and water park is just minutes away, with 45+ rides, roller coasters, and Hurricane Harbor water park

Visitor Tips

  • Best Time: June–August for swimming and peak season; September–October for fall foliage hiking; winter for snow sports.
  • Six Flags Combo: Many families camp at the state park and visit the theme park during the day — it’s much cheaper than staying at Six Flags’ own accommodation.
  • Pets: Welcome on leash at campsites and trails. Proof of rabies vaccination required.
  • Vehicle Entry Fee: $7 per vehicle during peak season.
