The DNR manages Drummond Island as a 47,802-acre management area of the Michigan state forest. About 85 percent of it is forested, mostly aspen, northern hardwoods and upland conifers, with cedar in the lowlands. The DNR publishes maps of the designated ORV routes and trails on the island (Drummond Island Route & Trail, east and west), and its forest plan names the Great Lakes shoreline as important stopover habitat for migratory birds.

Drummond Island SF — on Drummond Island, the largest island in Lake Huron (after Manitoulin, which is Canadian) — provides remote recreation in a wild island setting. The island’s boreal forest, alvars (limestone pavement), and shoreline support black bears, bald eagles, and osprey. Elk have been reintroduced. Common loons nest on inland lakes. The rare alvar ecosystem supports unique plant communities.
