Mineral Mound is, first and foremost, a golf park — Kentucky State Parks describes it as “primarily a golf course,” and the course is the reason most visitors come. The 18-hole, par-72 championship layout now plays under the name The Cullan at Mineral Mound, a Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry design stretching to 6,561 yards from the tips (rating 72.7, slope 130), with freshly renovated bunkers and four tee sets down to 4,411 yards. The front nine runs along Lake Barkley with water views on most holes; the back nine turns into the woods. Green fees are dynamic — roughly $45–$70 for 18 holes on summer weekends, falling to about $29 for late-day nine — and always include a cart. On the Water
The park’s launching ramp on Lake Barkley is open year-round, and you can fish from the pier and the bank around the courtesy dock. Lake Barkley covers 39,496 acres on the Kentucky side, and its special limits differ from statewide rules: bass must measure 15 inches, crappie 10 inches with a 20-fish limit, sauger 14 inches with a limit of 6. A Kentucky fishing license is required — buy it at fw.ky.gov before you go.
One honest note: the park has no hiking trails. If you’re not here to golf, fish, or launch a boat, the picnic area near the ramp is the extent of it — but the grounds double as a small wildlife refuge, with osprey over the lake, bluebird nesting boxes along the course, and the park’s famous albino skunks after dusk.
Best Time to Visit
Everything here runs year-round: the golf course stays open weather permitting, and the boat ramp, fishing pier and picnic area never close for the season. That makes Mineral Mound one of the easier western-Kentucky parks to visit on short notice — there is no entrance gate to beat and no season to plan around. For golf, the dynamic pricing rewards flexibility: weekday and late-afternoon tee times cost noticeably less than weekend mornings.
Visitor Tips
There is no general admission fee — like all Kentucky State Parks, you pay only for what you use, which here means green fees, and fishing requires your own Kentucky license. Two rules worth knowing on the course: outside alcohol is prohibited by law, and private coolers are not allowed — the pro shop sells beer and snacks.
The park has no campground. The closest official camping on the same lake is the Lake Barkley Campground at Lake Barkley State Resort Park in Cadiz, with utility hookups and two shower houses; for a golf trip, Kentucky State Parks suggests pairing The Cullan with Kentucky Dam Village.
And the name on the gate has a story: this land was once the farm of Willis B. Machen, grandfather of Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald — F. Scott Fitzgerald’s wife. The park leans into it: “It’s not hard to imagine the serene, Gatsby-style era from this park.”
