About Pecos Canyon

The Pecos River โ 926 miles long โ flows from 12,000-foot peaks near Santa Fe to the Rio Grande at the Texas border. The upper Pecos is one of New Mexico’s premier trout streams. The adjacent Pecos Wilderness (223,000 acres) is one of the first areas designated under the 1964 Wilderness Act.

The village of Pecos (15 minutes) has the Pecos National Historical Park โ a 15th-century pueblo and Spanish mission church. Santa Fe (30 miles west) provides world-class dining, art galleries, and cultural attractions. Stream fishing requires a New Mexico fishing license; special trout stamps may apply in designated waters.
Nature & Wildlife
The upper Pecos River supports brown and rainbow trout in its cold, clear mountain waters. The Sangre de Cristo range’s mixed conifer forests shelter elk, black bears, and Abert’s squirrels (tassel-eared squirrels found only in ponderosa pine forests). The canyon’s riparian corridor attracts American dippers โ aquatic songbirds that walk underwater on stream bottoms to feed. Peregrine falcons nest on the canyon walls.
