Resting high on the cliffs of the Sevier Plateau at an elevation of 5,900 feet, Piute State Park offers a rugged, proudly primitive outdoor experience in central Utah. Located roughly three hours south of Salt Lake City near the town of Junction, this park serves as a serene, uncrowded alternative to Utah’s heavily trafficked southern desert parks.

The beating heart of the park is the massive 3,360-acre Piute Reservoir. Created in 1908 by damming the Sevier River, the clear, cool waters have transformed the high desert basin into an oasis. Today, the park is famous among two very distinct groups of outdoor enthusiasts: anglers seeking trophy-sized trout, and off-roaders looking for direct access to one of the largest continuous ATV trail networks in the United States.

World-Class Reservoir Fishing

While the surrounding facilities are minimal, the fishing in Piute Reservoir is nothing short of exceptional. The massive volume of cold water creates a perfect habitat for massive fish to thrive through the intense Utah summers.

Trophy Trout

The reservoir is heavily stocked by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and is incredibly famous for producing trophy-sized Rainbow, Cutthroat, and Brown Trout. Because of the lake’s massive size, the fish have plenty of room to grow unseen before striking a well-placed lure.

Bass and Wipers

In addition to the cold-water trout species, the rocky shorelines and submerged structures offer fantastic habitats for aggressive Smallmouth Bass. The state also stocks “Wipers” (a sterile hybrid cross between striped and white bass) which are known for their ferocious fight on the line.

Both shore fishing and deep-water trolling via motorized boats are highly productive. The park maintains excellent, fully paved boat ramps to accommodate heavy trailered boats, and there are completely unregulated speed zones for water skiers and wakeboarders in the deep central channels.

The Paiute ATV Trail System

For many visitors, the lake is secondary to the dirt. Piute State Park serves as a premier launching point for the world-renowned Paiute ATV Trail System. Recognized routinely by off-road magazines as one of the best OHV (Off-Highway Vehicle) trail networks in the country, the primary loop covers a staggering 275 uninterrupted miles.

Trail FeatureWhat to Expect
The Primary LoopThe main 275-mile loop takes roughly 3 to 4 days of continuous riding to complete, crossing over three mountain ranges and dipping through deep, rugged canyons.
Side TrailsAttached to the main loop are over 1,000 miles of marked side trails, and an estimated 1,500 miles of tertiary Forest Service roads, ensuring riders can return for decades and never ride the same route twice.
Direct AccessOne of the greatest benefits of Piute State Park is that there are no trailering requirements. You can ride your ATV or side-by-side directly from your campsite on the beach onto the main trailheads.

Primitive Beach Camping

Camping at Piute State Park is an exercise in self-sufficiency. This is a strictly primitive park. There are absolutely no designated campsites, no electrical hookups, and crucially, no culinary drinking water available anywhere on the grounds.

Instead, visitors are allowed to pull their trucks, trailers, or tents directly out onto the vast, rocky beaches surrounding the reservoir and set up camp wherever they choose for $8 a night. Vault toilets (outhouses) are positioned along the main beach access roads. Campers must pack in everything they will need and strictly follow “Leave No Trace” principles by packing out all their trash. If you require modern amenities, the nearby town of Junction (just 10 minutes away) offers private, full-service RV parks with hookups and laundry facilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to make a reservation to camp?

No. Because all camping occurs in undesignated spots along the open beach, all camping at Piute State Park is strictly first-come, first-served year-round.

Are there places to rent ATVs or boats nearby?

Yes, while the park itself does not manage rentals, there are numerous private outfitters. Invert Sports operates near the park for watercraft rentals, and several businesses in the adjacent town of Marysvale offer full-day UTV and ATV rentals for the Paiute Trail.

Is the park open during the winter?

Yes, the park is technically open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. However, at an elevation of nearly 6,000 feet, winter temperatures plunge below freezing, and the reservoir often freezes over, making it a popular destination for hardcore ice fishing.
