Putnam Memorial — “Connecticut’s Valley Forge” — preserves the site where General Israel Putnam’s Continental Army endured the brutal winter of 1778-79. Beyond its historical significance, the park’s 270 acres support mature forest with impressive specimen trees. The meadows around the encampment ruins support grassland butterflies and wildflowers. Red-tailed hawks nest in the park’s tall white pines. The forest has grown over the soldiers’ hut sites — archaeologists have found buttons, buckles, and musket balls beneath the leaf litter. White-tailed deer browse the forest edges, as they likely did when hungry Continental soldiers supplemented their meager rations with venison. The park demonstrates how historical preservation inadvertently protects natural habitat.
