Wildlife & Nature
Seven Devils State Recreation Site provides access to the southern Oregon coast near Bandon — where dramatic coastal terrain creates diverse habitat. The area’s name — like many “devil” place names on the Oregon coast — reflects early settlers’ perceptions of the wild, treacherous coastline. Oregon’s coast claimed more than 2,000 shipwrecks between the 1700s and 1900s — earning the nickname “Graveyard of the Pacific.” The coastal forest here includes shore pine (a wind-adapted subspecies of lodgepole pine) and Sitka spruce draped in mosses. Coastal wildflowers include sea thrift, coast paintbrush, and yellow sand verbena. The offshore rocks support nesting seabirds. Harbor seals and their pups rest on protected reefs. Brown pelicans patrol the surf in squadron formation.
