Wildlife & Nature
Face Rock State Scenic Viewpoint overlooks Bandon’s most iconic sea stack — a 70-foot basalt formation that, when viewed from the proper angle, resembles a face staring skyward. Coquille tribal legend tells of a princess turned to stone while staring at the evil spirit Seatco. The offshore sea stacks — remnants of an ancient coastline eroded over millennia — provide critical nesting habitat for seabirds. Tufted puffins, with their distinctive orange beaks and golden head plumes, nest in burrows on the rock faces. Common murres pack shoulder-to-shoulder on narrow ledges. Brandt’s and pelagic cormorants nest on cliff faces. The intertidal zone supports purple sea urchins, giant green anemones, and recovering populations of ochre sea stars.
