Wildlife & Nature
Cape Arago is one of Oregon’s premier marine wildlife viewing destinations. Simpson Reef and Shell Island — visible from the cape’s viewpoints — host one of the largest concentrations of pinnipeds (seals and sea lions) on the Oregon coast. Thousands of harbor seals, Steller sea lions, California sea lions, and northern elephant seals haul out on the rocks. Elephant seal bulls can weigh 5,000+ pounds — making them the largest carnivores in the Pacific. The cape’s tidepools are among the richest on the coast — giant green anemones, purple sea urchins, and ochre sea stars (recovering from the devastating 2013-2015 sea star wasting disease). Gray whales are visible during migration, and resident gray whales feed here year-round.
