🌳 Old-Growth Pines Along the Salmon Falls River — 17th-Century Heritage and Hamilton House — A 165-acre state park with old-growth pine and hemlock forest, 3 miles of riverside hiking trails, historic Hamilton House (NHL), and picnic grounds along the Salmon Falls River — South Berwick, York County, Maine
Vaughan Woods State Park preserves 165 acres of old-growth pine and hemlock forest along the banks of the Salmon Falls River in South Berwick, Maine. The towering canopy here has stood for centuries — this is one of the few accessible old-growth stands in southern Maine, bequeathed to the state in 1949 by Elizabeth Vaughan with the wish to preserve it in a “natural wild state.”
Adjacent to the park stands the Hamilton House — a 1785 Georgian-style mansion overlooking the river, designated a National Historic Landmark and operated by Historic New England as a seasonal house museum. The combination of ancient forest, river trails, and colonial architecture makes this one of Maine’s most atmospheric day trips.
