Washougal Oaks Natural Area — 79 acres near Washougal in Clark County — protects one of the last remnants of Oregon white oak (Garry oak) woodland in Washington’s Columbia River Gorge. Oregon white oak — Washington’s only native oak — once covered vast areas of the Willamette and Puget lowlands. Lewis’s woodpeckers — named by the Lewis and Clark Expedition — inhabit the open woodland. Western bluebirds and western gray squirrels (threatened in Washington) are present. White-tailed deer browse in the meadows.
