🏔️ Columbia Gorge Gateway — Where the river meets the mountains, Rooster Rock offers 3 miles of sandy beaches, world-class disc golf, and Oregon’s first officially designated clothing-optional area. Just 22 miles from Portland, this 800-acre park delivers a full day of adventure with stunning Gorge scenery.

Rooster Rock State Park sits at the western gateway to the Columbia River Gorge, one of America’s most dramatic landscapes. The massive basalt monolith that gives the park its name towers over sandy beaches, calm lagoons, and wind-whipped waters that attract windsurfers from around the world. Lewis and Clark camped here in 1805, originally dubbing it “Cock Rock” before Victorian-era maps sanitized the name.

Today, the park draws everyone from families building sandcastles to disc golf enthusiasts tackling two 18-hole courses, to visitors seeking Oregon’s most famous clothing-optional beach. Whether you’re here to paddle the lagoon, catch bass from the shore, or simply escape Portland for an afternoon, Rooster Rock delivers the full Columbia Gorge experience without the crowds of Multnomah Falls.

Beaches & Swimming

Rooster Rock features over 3 miles of sandy beaches along the Columbia River. The park is divided into two distinct beach areas, separated by sand dunes and vegetation for privacy.

Main Beach (Clothed)

The family-friendly main beach offers calm waters, picnic areas, and easy access from the parking lots. The lagoon area is especially good for young children—shallow, warm, and protected from river currents.

Clothing-Optional Beach (Collins Beach)

Oregon’s first officially designated clothing-optional beach occupies the eastern section of the park. It’s geographically separated from the main beach by high dunes and a half-mile walk. This naturist area attracts visitors seeking a more liberated beach experience. Note: Respectful behavior is strictly enforced.

⚠️ Columbia River Safety: The river has strong currents and cold temperatures even in summer. Swim only in designated areas (lagoon and beach shallows). Never swim near the main channel.

Disc Golf

Rooster Rock is a disc golf destination, featuring two full 18-hole courses that draw players from across the Pacific Northwest:

CourseHolesDifficultyNotes

🥏 Sandy Bottom Course18Beginner-FriendlyFlatter terrain, great for learning

Courses are free with park entry. Bring your own discs—no rentals available on-site.

Windsurfing & Kiteboarding

The Columbia River Gorge is legendary for its consistent winds, and Rooster Rock catches them perfectly. The park’s west-facing beaches are ideal for intermediate to advanced windsurfers and kiteboarders. Launch from the main beach area when winds are from the west/northwest.

Best conditions: June through September, afternoon thermals (typically 15-25 mph).

Fishing

The lagoon and river offer good fishing opportunities year-round:

  • Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass — Lagoon (spring/summer)
  • Walleye — River channel (spring)
  • Steelhead — River (fall/winter)
  • Carp — Lagoon shallows (summer)

Oregon fishing license required for anglers 12+.

Lewis & Clark History

In November 1805, the Lewis and Clark Expedition camped near this very spot during their journey to the Pacific. They named the distinctive basalt column “Cock Rock” in their journals, noting its unmistakable shape. Later mapmakers, perhaps blushing, changed it to “Rooster Rock.”

The park includes interpretive signage about the expedition and the geological forces that created the Columbia River Gorge.
