Nestled on the eastern shore of the massive, glacier-fed Flathead Lake, Yellow Bay State Park is a picturesque, 15-acre getaway located just 14 miles south of Bigfork, Montana. Because it sits within the boundaries of the Flathead Indian Reservation, this small but mighty state park offers a unique cultural and recreational footprint, surrounded by the world-famous Montana sweet cherry orchards that explode into brilliant white blossoms every spring.

Known for its exceptionally wide, gravelly beach and its deep-water boat launch (which rarely freezes in the winter), Yellow Bay is a haven for boaters, anglers, and tent campers looking for a quieter, more intimate Flathead Lake experience compared to the larger, bustling parks nearby.

What to Do at Yellow Bay State Park

Despite its small 15-acre footprint, Yellow Bay packs in a surprising amount of world-class water recreation, largely thanks to its prime location on the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi.

Boating and Water Sports

The park’s crown jewel is its deep-water boat launch, making it one of the premier access points on the eastern shore for motorboating, sailboats, and water skiing. A seasonal boat dock is typically in place from mid-March through November, weather permitting. Kayakers and canoers also love launching from the wide, sweeping gravel beach.

Lake Trout Fishing

Flathead Lake is legendary for its massive Mackinaw (Lake Trout). However, because Yellow Bay sits on the Flathead Indian Reservation, a joint State/Tribal fishing license is required for all anglers. Check current fishing regulations carefully before casting your line.

Swimming and Sunbathing

The park boasts a surprisingly wide, gravelly beach that is perfect for spreading out a towel and soaking up the Montana summer sun. The water here is crystal clear and famously deep, offering excellent, refreshing swimming during the hot months of July and August. Scuba diving is also surprisingly popular in the deep waters just offshore.

The Cherry Harvest

Yellow Bay is the epicenter of Montana’s famous Flathead Cherry industry. If you visit in May, you’ll be treated to a spectacular display of cherry blossoms surrounding the park. If you visit in late July or August, you can buy incredibly fresh, sweet cherries from dozens of roadside stands or U-pick orchards directly adjacent to the park entrance.

Camping at Yellow Bay

Unlike many state parks that cater to massive RVs and fifth-wheels, Yellow Bay is an old-school, tent-focused campground. It offers a rustic, intimate camping experience directly on the lake.

Campground TypeAmenitiesImportant Restrictions
Tent Only Sites (5 Total)Picnic tables, pedestal grills, bear-resistant food lockers.First-come, first-served only. No reservations accepted. Tents only.

Important Camping Notes: The campground is open from May 1 through September 30. There is a strict 14-day camping limit within any 30-day period. Because the park is in bear country, the use of the provided bear-resistant storage lockers is mandatory for all food, coolers, and scented items.

Facilities and Tribal Status

Yellow Bay offers well-maintained facilities, including a reservable picnic shelter, ADA-accessible parking, and vault toilets year-round. From mid-May through Labor Day, visitors also have access to potable drinking water and flush toilets.

Because the park is situated within the Flathead Indian Reservation, visitors must be aware that any recreation outside the immediate state park boundaries requires a specific Tribal Recreation Permit from the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes.

Frequently Asked Questions
