Presenting stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and a convenient location nearby Brenton Reef, the Brenton Point State Park is a ‘must visit’ destination for all nature lovers.

Situated in Newport, on Rhode Island, the park occupies 89 picturesque acres of land that used to house a very grande estate. Today it is a popular destination for fishing, boating, hiking, birding and picnicking, attracting visitors from all over the East Coast.

Unfortunately there are no camping options available at this Rhode Island state park, so it operates as a day use facility. However, if you are looking for a place that offers peace, serenity and somewhere to unwind in nature, this is as good a destination as any.

During their time at the park, guests can enjoy a plethora of outdoor recreational activities which really showcase its stunning scenic beauty.

Boating at Brenton Point State Park

The shimmering waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Newport Harbor are a haven for boating enthusiasts due to its location on the shores of Narragansett Bay.

The park’s location on the bay provides plenty of open water for sailors to explore, and there are several nearby marinas and yacht clubs that offer boat rentals and sailing lessons for those who need them.

Visitors can also launch their own sailboats or kayaks from the park’s boat ramp, which is located near its eastern edge.

Please note, personal watercraft like jet skis, are not allowed in the park’s waters, so you will have to leave them at home.

Fishing at Brenton Point State Park

The park’s location on the shores of Narragansett Bay makes it a prime spot for fishing enthusiasts. Open year-round, fishing is allowed throughout the seasons, although certain areas may be closed during the winter months.

One of the most popular fishing activities at Brenton Point is surfcasting. The rocky shoreline provides access to deeper water, making it a great spot to catch a variety of fish, including striped bass, bluefish, fluke and flounder.

In addition, visitors can fish from boats in the waters off the shoreline. The park’s boat ramp provides easy access to the bay, and there are several marinas and charter fishing services in the area that offer boat rentals and fishing trips.

If you want to go fishing at the park, you must hold a valid Rhode Island fishing license. These are readily available from the main office if you don’t have one.

Hiking at Brenton Point State Park

As well as the aquatic activities, Brenton Point State Park also offers several hiking opportunities for visitors to enjoy.

The rocky shoreline of Narragansett Bay, accommodates a number of scenic trails that present wonderful views of the water and nearby landscape from various vantage points.

Most visitors to the park attempt the Ocean Walk Trail, which takes you on a 3/4 of a mile course along the coastline. It conveys breathtaking views of the bay, as well as nearby mansions and landmarks such as the Castle Hill Lighthouse.

Rated as relatively easy, the trail has a paved surface and only a few moderate inclines. So it should be straightforward for most people.

For those who want a bit more of a trek, the 1.5 mile loop of the Brenton Point Trail, guides you through the park’s wooded areas on a moderate trail that features steep inclines and uneven terrain. Whilst on it, you will be able to take in outstanding views of the bay and surrounding landscape.

Picnicking at Brenton Point State Park

Many people who visit the park take the opportunity to enjoy a picnic.

Throughout it, there are a number of picnic areas that afford tremendous views of the ocean, Narragansett Bay and nearby Brenton Reef.

Visitors can bring their own food, but alcohol is forbidden. The park also features a pavilion that can be rented for special occasions, such as weddings, family reunions, and other events.

Birding at Brenton Point State Park

For those who enjoy bird watching, the park’s stunning location provides an excellent base to observe several species.

From migratory birds to seabirds, the park is home to a number of different breeds throughout the year. Some of them live at the park all year round, whilst others stop by during their annual spring or fall migration.

Visitors can observe birds from the park’s trails and shoreline, or participate in one of its guided birdwatching tours. To improve your chances of seeing them, it is worth bringing a pair of binoculars with you.

Pets at Brenton Point State Park

The park prides itself on being pet-friendly along it does impose certain restrictions on the presence of dogs.

One involves your pooch being restrained on a handheld leash for the entire time they are at Brenton Point State Park. Another restricts them from entering certain parts of it.

Camping at Brenton Point State Park

Sadly, Brenton Point State Park does not offer camping facilities within its beautiful setting. However, there are several camping options near the park which you can choose to stay at.

Both Fishermen’s Memorial State Park in Narragansett and the Melville Ponds Campground in Portsmouth are within 20 minute drives of the park. They provide modern campsites with water and electricity as well as amenities like showers, restrooms, a playground, dump station and a camp store.

As demand is high, especially in the summer, it is a good idea to make a reservation at either of them, if you intend to stay there.
