Frequently Asked Questions

What are kettle ponds?

Kettle ponds are freshwater lakes formed by retreating glaciers. When massive ice blocks broke off and were buried in sediment, they eventually melted and left behind depressions that filled with groundwater. Nickerson’s eight kettle ponds feature crystal-clear water that’s remarkably clean because it’s fed by groundwater rather than streams.

Can you swim at Nickerson State Park?

Yes! Multiple ponds have sandy beaches perfect for swimming, including Flax Pond, Cliff Pond, and Higgins Pond. The water is pristine, groundwater-fed, and gets wonderfully warm during summer months. Lifeguards are typically on duty during the summer season at designated beaches.

What are the yurts like?

The yurts are canvas-sided, cabin-like structures that accommodate 4-6 guests. They include bunk beds, chairs, tables, and access to water and electricity. However, they are not heated, so they’re best for warmer months. Bring your own linens and eating utensils—and note that pets are not allowed in yurts.

How far in advance should I book camping?

Reservations open 4 months before your arrival date and Nickerson fills quickly, especially for summer weekends. Walk-in camping is not allowed—you must have a reservation. Book through ReserveAmerica online or by phone. The minimum stay is 2 days, with a maximum of 14 cumulative days between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Can you bike to the Cape Cod Rail Trail?

Absolutely! Nickerson’s 8-mile internal paved bike path system connects directly to the 26-mile Cape Cod Rail Trail. This makes it perfect for cyclists—you can spend days exploring Cape Cod by bike right from your campsite. The internal trails wind through scenic forests and around the beautiful kettle ponds.
