Things to Do
Alcona Park lies on the AuSable River and has 470 campsites, of which 240 are seasonal sites, plus 13 rental cabins. The rest are modern, semi-modern, full-service and rustic sites; the 30 rustic sites at Birch Point are first come, first served. The park also has three boat launches, hiking trails, four picnic pavilions, five playgrounds and public day-use picnic areas. Hunting and firearms are not permitted anywhere in the park. Best Time to Visit
The modern campground is open from April 15 to December 1, the full-service and semi-modern areas from May 15 to October 1, and the seasonal sites from May 1 to October 1. The office opens for reservations on April 1, and from June 25 to August 15 reservations in the modern, semi-modern and full-service areas need a minimum stay of five nights. The park asks you to call ahead for opening dates (as of October 2026).
Visitor Tips
Alcona Park is managed by Curtis Township, not by the Michigan DNR, so the Recreation Passport and the DNR reservation system do not apply. Reservations are taken by phone (989-735-3881) or in person from April 1, with a $10 booking fee. From June 25 to August 15, the minimum stay is five nights in the modern, semi-modern and full-service sites.
