🏆🏆🏆🏆 Industrial Revolution Trail — Rail trail along the historic Turners Falls Canal — America’s first navigational canal (1798!)

Canalside Rail Trail follows the historic Turners Falls power canal in Montague — one of the first industrial canals in America, built in 1798 to bypass the Great Falls of the Connecticut River. The 3.5-mile paved trail passes industrial ruins, waterfalls, and views of the Connecticut River. The Great Falls (Peskeomskut in Wampanoag) was the site of the 1676 Falls Fight — one of the bloodiest episodes of King Philip’s War, when colonial forces attacked a sleeping Native encampment.
