Wildlife & Nature
William M. Tugman State Park on Eel Lake provides excellent family camping and lake recreation on the southern Oregon coast. Eel Lake — a coastal dune lake formed when migrating sand dunes blocked a stream — supports warm-water fish species unusual on the cold Oregon coast. The lake’s bass, bluegill, and yellow perch provide family-friendly fishing. The surrounding shore pine forest and coastal vegetation create a sheltered environment contrasting with the exposed ocean beaches just over the dunes. Great blue herons fish the lake’s shallow margins. Osprey — “fish hawks” — plunge feet-first into the lake to catch fish. Pacific tree frogs fill the evening air with their distinctive “ribbit” calls — despite being tiny (1-2 inches), their chorus can be heard 1,000+ feet away.
