Wildlife & Nature
Seal Rock — named for the harbor seals that rest on its distinctive offshore rock formations — offers some of the finest tidepool exploring on the central Oregon coast. The basalt formations create an intricate maze of pools, channels, and crevices teeming with marine life. Giant green anemones (up to 10 inches across) capture prey with stinging tentacles. Purple sea urchins graze algae from rock surfaces, creating visible depressions called “urchin hatcheries” over decades of feeding. Ochre sea stars — keystone predators that control mussel populations — are recovering from the devastating sea star wasting disease that killed millions along the Pacific Coast in 2013-2015. Harbor seals haul out on the rocks — their spotted gray coats provide camouflage. Black oystercatchers probe crevices with their bright orange bills.
